According to legend, Ithaki in the Ionian Sea
was the home of the ancient Greek hero Odysseus, depicted vividly in Homer’s
epic poem The
Odyssey. The great warrior returned here from Troy to be reunited
with his love, Penelope.
Melissa & I had sailed from the island of
Corfu in 2012 toward the beautiful islands around Lefkas. The weather had not permitted us
to enjoy these lush islands. So,
we returned and chartered a yacht out of the little fishing village of Vliho
.
Sailing toward Syvota, time for a lunch break
and swim at the beautiful southern tip of Nisos Arkoudi in the most vivid blue
turquoise water.
There is balance that one has to achieve. Time to enjoy the sea and serene
anchorages and time to enjoy the wine and festivities that can be found ashore.
Then time to explore-like the cave in the bay
of Foki just south of the lively town of Fiskardo on the island of Kefalonia.
And for the sailors who have lost their
compass, the lonely little secret taverna (Boskopalia) sitting literally on the
beach on the island of Kalamos.
To those who visualize a Greece of sunbaked
rocks dotted with dazzling whitewashed houses, the Ionian comes as a gentle
surprise – a shaded green country, Latin styled houses, with evergreen trees
and fields of flowers.
