Living in Guatemala - April 14 - May 13, 2010

We were curious to know what it would be like to actually live in a foreign country – not just a week long vacation. So, we rented our own villa for an extended stay. Spanish lessons each morning and shopping in the various local markets on a daily basis for fruits, vegetables, meats, homemade breads and fresh flowers – finding time to enjoy the art works and textiles hand made by the indigenous.

You really have to go to Guatemala to see these vivid colors. Chichicastenango is home to one of the most famous markets – row after rows of colorful stalls fill the square – over flowing in to the cobblestone alleys.

Our Villa would not be complete without our wonderful Dona Clara - helping us maintain the casa plus preparing an interesting menu utilizing the special products from the local markets - fruits, vegetables, tortillas, meats, spices & peppers unique to Guatemala.

Welcome to the Casa de Philippa - our Villa - located near the center of Antigua - comes with a panoramic view of "Volcan Agua", one of three active volcanoes.

The legend is that Ixchel - Mayan goddess - gave the art of weaving to her people. All cloth used is made from scratch - the cotton is spun, dyed, woven on a loom and then make into fabulous garments.
Tuk Tuks, pronounced "took tooks" are like riding in a blender - and if you've been drinking beer you'll need to stop at the very next bar to use "el bano". For only 10 Quetzals - and if your spanish is good - you can go almost anywhere!!

This is EXACTLY what Playa del Carmen looked like 25 years ago. No shirt, No shoes, No problem. Monterrico - the sleepy little fishing village on the Pacific Coast - our destination every weekend.
